“Legalizing e-cigs and vaping in Australia can help to reduce the number of people smoking and save many lives” said Clive Bates this week. He is a former head of Action on Smoking and Health UK and a leading advocate for e-cigs in England. He is currently in Australia to support the efforts to legalize e-cigs. Clive Bates said that he trip was privately funded so he had no financial links with the tobacco industry. He believes vaping products can result in one of the greatest public health wins of all time.
In Australia, however, the Senate Inquiry into the use and marketing of electronic cigarettes does not stop. It is legal to buy “vaping” devices and sell e-liquids that do not contain nicotine in this country. But it is illegal to sell, possess or use anything containing nicotine because it is classified as a poison there. So far, the Committee has supported the Therapeutic Goods Administration’s decision of forbidding the sale of liquid nicotine for e-cigarettes in June last year. Moreover, the Health Minister Greg Hunt persists that he will not reverse the ban.
“In England, vaping e-cigarettes is legal. It is a common consent that we should encourage smokers to use e-cigs as a way of quitting smoking. So it is surprising to me that Australians are breaking the law if they try to quit smoking by using e-cigs,” he said. “Why punish someone for doing what hundreds of thousands of Britains and Americans have done successfully and feel good about. What harm does it cause to people?”
“According to a recent US modelling study, if most of the Australian smokers choose to use e-cigarettes in the next 10 years, up to 500 thousand deaths related to smoking will not happen. I did a detailed submission to the inquiry and was invited for cross-examination,” he said. “I will address the Senate Inquiry tomorrow.”
