A new study about the e-cigarette safety was recently published in a European Medical Journal by Riccardo Polosa, Professor of Internal Medicine and scientific advisor for LIAF (acronym for Italian Anti-Smoking League). The research has concluded that “compared to combustible cigarettes, electronic cigarette are at least 96% less harmful and may substantially reduce individual risk and population harm.”
This research focused on the harmful effects for the lung and the respiratory system. According to a large survey carried out on the internet, many e-cigarette users diagnosed with asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) experienced “steady progressive improvements” after switching from combustible cigarettes to electronic cigarettes.
Although the long term safety of vaping is still unknown, there is an emerging evidence that e-cigs can reverse some of the harmful consequences caused by years of smoking. Moreover, improvements can be observed -according to this study- 6 to 12 months after switching.
Safer chemicals in electronic cigarettes
E-cigarettes are also safer than regular cigarettes when analyzing chemicals, as they do not contain the over 4,000 chemical compounds created by burning cigarettes. Many of these chemicals are toxic and/or carcinogenic (tar, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen cyanide…). However, e-liquid only contains four chemicals (propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine, flavoring and nicotine), posing minimal health risks.
Another recent study carried out by Portland State University, also stated that the vapor inhaled by e-cig users might contain multiple forms of formaldehyd, a well-known carcinogenic. Nonetheless, this harmful chemical is only released when vaping at very high voltage. Something that will not ever happen, because the taste of this vapor would be simply unbearable according cardiologist Konstantinos Farsalinos, a Greek scientist and vaping expert.
