Voopoo Alpha Zip 180W Review
The Voopoo Alpha Zip mod is the latest mod from ever-popular vape manufacturer Voopoo. Their Drag models are widely popular, especially the original one due to its performance and price point at the time. Following on from the original Drag came the Drag 2 and Drag 2 Platinum Mod.
So let’s see what the Alpha Zip can offer. The Alpha Zip is a dual 18650 battery mod rated at 180 watts. It comes in a kit with the new MAAT Tank. It’s available in 5 colors all of which have a silver frame and the color options are just different panels. The panel designs are called Stars, Checkerboard, Glory, Knight, and Locomotive.
The Voopoo Alpha Zip comes with 8 safety protections inside. These are Battery Reverse Protection, Over-Current Output Protection, Tank Short-Circuit Protection, Vaping Overtime Protection, Overcharge Protection, Charge Balance Protection, Over Temperature Protection and Low Discharge Protection.
Internally and keeping things in order is the new GENE .fit chip. This is more stable and powerful with 0.01s fire speed and 180W MAX output.

First Thoughts on the Voopoo Alpha Zip Mod
What a beautiful mod, my first thoughts are that this is a Drag in a fancy coat. Stylish paneling and solid metal body means this is a heavier mod than normal but it oozes style and feels well made. Not just well made in fact it is very well made. The panels are very well designed and the engraving is spot on.
The buttons feel nice and clicky and are of an easy size to press whilst holding. I would say that this is a pretty ergonomic mod despite its many straight edges. The screen dominates almost half of one of the sides and is crystal clear with all of the required information displayed easily.
A Look Around the Voopoo Alpha Zip
Starting from the top you will find a centralized 510 connection which sits flush to the body of the Voopoo Alpha Zip. The 510 connector is spring loaded with plenty of play. The front and back of the Alpha Zip are showcased by the large engraved panels. The glory mod that I received have gold engraved panels are polished to an almost mirror like shine! There is an average sized Voopoo logo here and no huge drag logo.
I love the whole look of this box mod. Down one side you will find a large square fire button, your screen and underneath these are your + and – buttons. These are rectangular and look like they are further divided into left and right but the dividing line is purely cosmetic. Below the buttons is your USB charge port. This doubles as a firmware upgrade port which is all I would recommend you use this for and instead charge your batteries externally.
Underneath you will find battery vent holes. The batteries themselves go into the mod via removal of one of the panels. The panel doors fit securely to the zip and in the review model I was sent there is no noticeable rattle from the door. It does not move when you touch it, and the magnets are doing their job perfectly.
How did I find the Voopoo Alpha Zip to use?
The Alpha Zip I have to admit I felt was going to be less superior than the Drag. Having owned a Drag for a long time I fear my opinions were going to be biased towards it. However, once I started using the Voopoo Alpha Zip on a daily basis, I quickly fell in love with it. Yes, it looks great, and the finish is flawless. Even after a month of use, the finish is barely marked. The panels are blemish free and have held up to being in my pocket daily. The weight is not a problem for me as I prefer a heavier mod as they tend to feel of better quality. I know this is not always true, but I like to believe it is !!
The Gene Fit chip makes light work of firing coils and produces that same super fast firing speed that Voopoo fans will have become used to. The fit mods offering various power settings let the chip manage your vaping experience perfectly but I have found myself not really using these and instead of using normal wattage mode.
Does my opinion of it being a Drag in a fancy coat still stand? Yes, it does. Internally, it’s the same as the Drag 2. It’s the external features that just make this mod, in my opinion, a little more superior to the Drag. Why do I think this? Well, with the exception of the platinum Drag, the paintwork on the original Drags really does suffer. Yes, performance is great, but who wants to show off a beaten up mod? Not me that’s for sure. For this reason alone this gives the Voopoo Alpha Zip the slight edge. It is stylish, well crafted and quality is spot on.
Overall, I highly recommend the Voopoo Alpha Zip mod.
